Wales: A Hotspot for UAP Encounters?

Updated: 1 day ago

Delving Deeper into the Night of the Triangles and Beyond

Wales, with its dramatic landscapes steeped in Celtic mythology, has also become a breeding ground for reports of Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP) or UFO sightings.

These encounters range from the strange to the spectacular, leaving a trail of unanswered questions and fueling the fires of curiosity.

One of the most intriguing cases occurred on the night of January 19th, 1983, now etched in history as the "Night of the Triangles."

This all happens 10 days after a potential UFO UAP crash close by, in Llanilar West Wales, here is a link to that case https://www.mufog.co.uk/post/llanilar-ufo-crash-west-wales-9th-jan-1983

The Night of the Triangles: A Night of Silent Triangular Visitors

On that fateful night, witnesses across Wales looked skyward in astonishment as strange triangular craft silently traversed the heavens. Reports poured in, painting a remarkably consistent picture.

Many described a silent, dark object with three points of light, ranging in size from that of a football pitch to colossal behemoths dwarfing anything ever seen before.

The objects reportedly moved with an unnerving fluidity, defying conventional notions of flight.

Witness Corroboration: Adding Weight to the Phenomenon

The Swansea UFO Network, a longstanding organization dedicated to documenting UAP sightings in Wales, meticulously collected witness reports following the Night of the Triangles.

One particularly compelling account came from two police officers in Llandeilo.

Detective Sergeant Michael Troake and Detective Constable Gethin James

Their experience, which is documented in the UK National Archives, adds significant weight to the credibility of the sightings.

The officers reported seeing a large rectangular object, with flashing blue lights arranged along the sides, and two blue triangular lights at the rear, the object was hovering silently. Their trained eyes and professional positions lend a layer of credibility often missing from such narratives.

Witness Report - from the SUFON.co.uk Archives

Detective Sergeant Michael Troake and Detective Constable Gethin James were carrying out enquiries into a spate of burglaries.

Mike explained that they were based in Morriston Police Station, they had gone to visit a member of the public in a house at the top of Maes-yr-Haf, Trallwn, they had just come out of the front door, which was at the top of steps, which faces south-west, with good views down the Swansea Valley.

Mike said, "Good God, what the hell is that?" Gethin replied, "It's like two football pitches", to which Mike said, "It's like the whole length of Woodfield Street" the main street in Morriston.

Mike described it as being rectangular, with flashing blue lights arranged along the sides, and there were two blue triangular lights at the rear, it was moving slowly towards them from the south-west about a half a mile to a mile away from them, moving from the Landore area, it was blocking out the stars behind it. They were looking up at it at an angle of about 45 degrees.

There was no sound from the object. When it was roughly over the Winch Wen area, it slowly turned to the left (the object's right) and shot off to the south, towards Swansea Bay.

They heard over their police radio that many reports were coming in from the public, about seeing unidentified objects in the sky. There were a number of calls from the Port Tennant and St. Thomas area.

About two hours later, back at the police station, they received a phone call from the RAF at Uxbridge, and they were both interviewed separately.

They were asked the same prepared questions, such as description, size, what did it do, etc.

Later BBC Wales telephoned and asked Mike for an interview, but he declined, fearing that they would be ridiculed.

Witness interviews carried out by the Swansea UFO Network in relation to 19th January 1983 mass sighting.

I joined Mike and Emlyn for a radio interview about the night of the triangles and we compare the details of the Hudson Valley cases that took place at the same time in 1983.

I also give details of my own missing time encounter that same night

Described in the following interview I did with Mike Maunder and Emlyn Williams from SUFON, we hear about the witness reports they have taken and found via various sources over the years since they began researching the case, these reports are still coming in!

A game of football gets stopped by the ref as a triangle passes over the pitch, a man riding his bicycle is forced into a ditch by a low flying object, people working in a factory report the lights going off in stages as an object flies above the factory.

Media Frenzy and Public Interest

The 1983 event caused a media frenzy, propelling UAP sightings into the public eye. Local and national newspapers across Wales were flooded with accounts from bewildered citizens. The South Wales Evening Post, on January 20th, 1983, reported on the phenomenon, detailing that hundreds of people had come forward with their sightings. Some witnesses claimed the object moved erratically and changed colors, adding another layer of mystery to the encounter.

UFO UAP Reports from the National Archives Jan 83'

Despite the wealth of reports and the undeniable public interest, the nature of these UAPs remains a mystery. While some explanations point to natural phenomena or misidentified aircraft, the consistency of descriptions in the 1983 event and the sheer number of credible witnesses leave room for further exploration. The possibility of extraterrestrial intelligence or advanced, unknown technology continues to captivate the public imagination.

Shifting Tides: The UK Ministry of Defence and UFO Transparency

The official stance of the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) on UFO sightings has evolved over time. While details remain scarce, the National Archives' release of UFO files suggests a shift towards some level of transparency. Perhaps with continued investigation, public discussion, and the courage of individuals to come forward with their experiences, the truth behind Wales' UAP encounters will one day be revealed.

If the mysteries of Wales' UAP encounters pique your curiosity, there are resources available to delve deeper. The National Archives' UFO files offer a glimpse into official documentation of these events: https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/help-with-your-research/research-guides/ufos/.

The night sky over Wales continues to hold its secrets, but with every reported encounter, the pursuit of understanding these enigmatic phenomena takes another step forward.
